About This Hip Flexibility Routine
If you’ve already built a foundation of hip mobility and want to take it further, this intermediate routine challenges you with deeper positions and more variety. Research shows that consistent stretching programs can produce meaningful improvements in range of motion and functional mobility.1 You’ll work through angles that basic routines often miss, helping you develop the kind of hip flexibility that translates to better movement in daily life and sports.
What This Routine Targets
This routine addresses your hip flexors, glutes, inner thighs, and the muscles along your outer hip. The combination of lunges, pigeon pose, and floor-based stretches ensures you hit each area from multiple angles. You’ll also get some spinal rotation work that helps release tension where your hips connect to your lower back.
What’s Included
The routine runs about eleven minutes and includes eleven exercises. You’ll progress from standing and kneeling lunges into deeper positions like lizard pose and pigeon. The sequence finishes with restorative floor work including spinal twists, reclined butterfly, and happy baby to help your body integrate the work you’ve done.
Who Should Try This
This routine works best if you already have some stretching experience. If basic hip stretches feel too easy and you’re ready to spend more time in challenging positions, this is a good next step. It’s also useful for runners, cyclists, and anyone who does activities that tighten the hips over time.
Tips for Best Results
Warm up before this routine with a few minutes of walking or light movement. The deeper positions like pigeon and lizard require your muscles to be ready. Move slowly into each stretch and give yourself time to settle before pushing further.
Pay attention to any asymmetry between your left and right sides. Most people have one hip that’s tighter than the other, and noting these differences helps you track progress over time.

Progressing Your Hip Mobility
Note any asymmetry between your left and right sides. Most people have one hip that’s tighter than the other, and tracking these differences helps you measure progress over time.
Try to do this routine two to three times per week. As these positions become more comfortable, you can extend the hold times or add additional hip opening exercises to continue building flexibility.
